Kansas City Directories

Before the modern phone book, cities published directories of their residents and Kansas City, Missouri was no exception. In addition to providing the resident’s name, they provided information regarding resident addresses and sometimes occupations. Entries listed by address, allowing reverse-lookups, began with the 1917 directory volume. Kansas City directories are available on microfilm in the Missouri Valley Room of the downtown Public Library. The available volumes are 1859-1942, 1945, 1947, 1949-1983, 1985-1990, 1992-1994, 1996-2020. Name searches of the Kansas City directories can be accessed online through the Heritage Quest database (a KC Public Library card number and PIN is required to access this resource). However searches can only be by name and not address and one cannot randomly view directory pages.
