Historic Registers & Inventories
There are two ways historic properties in the Hyde Park neighborhood have been recognized as significant and worthy of preservation - Kansas City (local) and National Registers of Historic Places. The National Register, a program of the National Park Service, is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. In Missouri, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) administers the process of recognizing and listing significant historic sites. Approximately seventy-five percent of the structures in Hyde Park are on the National Register. Being on the National Register is honorary and does not impose restrictions on private property.
The Kansas City Register of Historic Places is overseen by the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), which was established by ordinance to protect the city’s heritage. The HPC is authorized to impose restrictions on listed properties. They review nominations for the National Register and advise the SHPO for designations. The HPC also manages Kansas City's historic designations and must approve any visible, from the public streets, exterior changes to listed sites. A Building Permit cannot be issued without HPC approval and a Certificate of Appropriateness. Commonly reviewed projects include changes to the following: windows, doors, roofs, fences, exterior paint colors, sidewalks, driveways, solar panels, and additions.
The Janssen Place and North Hyde Park Historic Districts are on the KC Register of Historic Places. In addition, three houses are individually listed—E.P. Morgan Residence at 3328 Harrison, E.F. Swinney Residence at 3334 Harrison, and Wright Residence at 3800 Campbell. Check here to see if your property is on the KC Register of Historic Places. Note: The map does not show properties listed on the National Register.
These HPC documents assist property owners in making renovations to National and Kansas City historic designated residential properties:

Demolition Review Ordinance
On December 19, 2024, the KC City Council adopted a demolition review ordinance requiring all proposed demolition of buildings over 50 years in age to be reviewed to determine if they meet the criteria to be listed on the Kansas City or National Register of Historic Places. The historic preservation office staff will assess each building individually. Click here for more information.
